Overview

Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts) students spend their class time working on their art, instead of sitting in lecture halls.

  • Faculty members are successful artists and designers
  • Class sizes are kept small so students benefit from individual attention
  • Some of the world’s top creative minds visit campus to speak and conduct workshops

In 2014, there were more 1,225 students from 30 countries on campus, with an average of 16 students per faculty member in each class.

Located in Calgary with 293,000 square feet in studio space, AUArts’ 11 degree programs are housed within four academic schools:

  • Craft + Emerging Media
  • Visual Arts
  • Communication Design
  • Critical + Creative Studies.

The BFA and B.Des. programs begin with First Year Studies, a wide variety of studio and theory-based courses that prepare you for your studies in fine art, craft, design and media arts.

The MFA program in Craft Media brings graduate students to campus, enriching AUArts with new energy, a higher level of research, and creating new conversations about contemporary craft.

To make sure you get the help you need, AUArts offers academic support, writing assistance and professional counselling services for all students. The university also has an active and inclusive international students group that make four annual visits to Alberta historic sites, including:

  • Lake Louise and Banff
  • Jasper National Park
  • Dinosaur Provincial Park, the world’s richest deposit of dinosaur bones
