Headstart Mercy Montessori is a Private Higher Education Institute providing full-time Montessori teacher training. Headstart Mercy Montessori is the only training institution in South Africa that offers a Level 6 qualification for ECD, early years (pre-school) educators. This enables students to apply for work in both traditional and Montessori environments as pre-school teachers.
3 Year Full-time Course
NQF Level 6 Diploma in Early Childhood Development: Montessori Teaching
The Level 6 Diploma in Early Childhood Development: Montessori Teaching is the Professional Qualification in Montessori Teaching. This is a three year full time course that covers Montessori methodology and practice from birth to 9 years. The course also includes Xhosa, music, drama and communication skills.
The full-time NQF Level 6 Course – only available in Cape Town – runs for 5 hours per day x 5 days per week and has a credit value of 360.
This Qualification is registered with SAQA, and accredited by the Council on Higher Education. Our organization is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, to offer this qualification.

Montessori Theory:
Theoretical base for Montessori philosophy and approach to education
Montessori Methodology:
Teaching methodology encompassing all relevant Pre-Primary subject areas
Psychology:
The psychology of child development and its application in the classroom
Classroom Observation:
Guided weekly observation in Montessori environments
Classroom Subjects:
Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Cultural subjects and Creative Arts.

1 Year Bridging Course:
Upgrading an EDTP-SETA to Level 5 to Level 6 Diploma
If you have completed tour EDTP-SETA Level 5 qualification, you are legible to upgrade to our NQF Level 6 Diploma.
This course is available for traditional teachers who would like the Montessori component.
This Course is available for traditional teachers who would like insight into the Montessori Foundation Phase classroom.

• Academic Writing
• Language and literature
• Maths and geometry
• Teaching culture through integrated themes
Course duration: 1 year
Times:
15h00 – 18h00 Tuesdays and Thursdays during term times, plus workshops during school holidays.
A compulsory teaching practice is required for upgrade students.
The Academic Year
Our Academic Year starts in January and runs through to December. We follow the Western Cape Education Department Term calendar.
