In the origins, the University of Kibungo (UNIK) was named Université d’Agriculture, de Technology and d’Education de Kibungo (UNATEK), started as community university recognized by the Government of the Republic of Rwanda, through the Ministry for Education.
The convention of recognition was signed by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology and the Chairman of APSK (Association for the Promotion of Higher Education in Kibungo Province) on March 27, 2003. This is the very year, the the former UNATEK opened its doors. The name was changed as Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education of Kibungo (INATEK) in 2010 with its accreditation.
UNIK main campus is established in Ngoma District, Eastern Province (Rwanda). It is around 150 kilometers from the capital city Kigali and 60 kilometers from Rusumo border (Tanzania). The University is in a strategic position for students from all provinces of the country as well as the East African Community citizens.
