We will provide leadership on all matters pertaining to national development planning, prudent financial and economic management for sustained economic development.
MINISTRY MANDATE
The overall mandate of the Ministry of Finance is to coordinate national development planning as well as mobilize and prudently manage available financial and economic resources. Further to that, the MoF is responsible for the formulation of economic and financial policies for sustainable economic development.
The Ministry of Finance exists to:
· Mobilize leadership on all matters pertaining to national development and planning.
· Provide financial and economic management.
· Provide relevant, reliable and timely socioeconomic, financial and statistical information.
· Provide leadership in planning and formulation of economic and financial policies
· Coordinate the preparation and implementation of national development plans
· Regulate financial institutions.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The major areas of responsibility of the Ministry of Finance are:
· Mobilize resources for economic development.
· Improve accountability for the use of resources.
· Facilitate improvements in proper implementation and monitoring processes.
· Ensure strict adherence to budgetary processes.
· Facilitate the contributing role of the private sector and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to the strategy of creating greater prosperity and embracing this in the development process.
· Facilitate and support citizen economic empowerment schemes and initiatives.
· Facilitate involvement of Botswana in regional and global economic issues
KEY FUNCTIONS OF MINISTRY
The key functions of the Ministry of Finance fall into three main areas:
· Treasury and budget administration
· Economic management and national development planning coordination
· Financial administration and management
The MoF also operates through a number of parastatals that complement its efforts as well as that of the Government’s national development. This is done by the parastatals performing certain specific roles and functions in line with the Government of Botswana’s mandate. These parastatals can be clustered into three major categories:
· Financial Parastatals.
· Non-Financial Enterprises
· Non-Financial Parastatal Institutions
