Agricultural Engineering

Agricultural Engineering is a study program dealing with Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs)/techniques of crop and animal production, and the value addition of the production by processing, i.e. transformation of produce into edible value added food products.

Agricultural Engineering Department

1.Introduction

Agricultural Engineering is the area of engineering that focuses on the science behind food and farming, and how to help today’s agricultural methods and products meet national and global food demands. It is concerned with the design, construction and improvement of farming equipment and machinery, farming infrastructures, machine efficiency, the use of structures and facilities, pollution and environmental issues, the storage and processing of agricultural products.

Agricultural engineering integrates technology with farming. Agricultural engineering is involved in designing and building agricultural infrastructure such as dams, water reservoirs, warehouses, and other structures. It is also involved in designing food storage structures and food processing plants, animal housing and environments for livestock. Currently, at IPRC Musanze, the department of agricultural engineering comprises three training programs: Crop Processing; Irrigation and Drainage Technology; and Food Processing.

2. Departmental Training objectives

Program 1Crop Production: To train Agriculture technicians equipped with knowledge, competences and skills required to contribute to efficient & sustainable agriculture and efficient post-harvest handling to ensure food security.

Program 2Irrigation and Drainage Technology: To train Irrigation and Drainage technicians equipped with competences and skills required to plan, design, install and maintain surface irrigation, pressurized irrigation and drainage systems and having fundamental theoretical knowledge underlying those practical skills to make a significant contribution to agricultural sector to ensure food security.

Program 3: Food Processing: To train Food Processing technicians equipped with knowledge, competences and skills required to contribute to efficient post-harvest handling, harvest processing & nutritional value addition, and to new food product development to ensure food security.
