Actuarial Science

The Actuarial Science program at the University of Central Oklahoma is the only such program in the state of Oklahoma. The course of study was originally designed by Actuaries at American Fidelity Assurance Co. in Oklahoma City. The focus of the degree program is to give students a strong analytical background in the areas of mathematics and statistics as well as the actuarial specific topics such as theory of interest and mathematics of life contingencies.

Applied Liberal Arts

The Applied Liberal Arts program is a unique, interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree which brings together a solid grounding in the Liberal Arts, select courses specifically pertinent to the business world, and the ability complete a concentration in a wide-ranging selection of humanities, math, science, fine arts, and social sciences disciplines. This field of study offers students both academic rigor and the ability to combine theoretical understanding with “real-world” experiences and flexible areas of focus. An Applied Liberal Arts graduate will be prepared for a variety of career opportunities.

Art – Studio Art

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art emphasizes dedicated studio work and the advanced use of a variety of media. Students examine prevailing social, cultural and personal interest that are reflected in the energy and contemporary nature of their work. Students’ art is a manifestation of their individual identity and conceptual research. Taken in combination with lectures and seminars in Global Arts and Visual Culture a link to both historical cultures and contemporary means of expression is emphasized. Advanced studio students may choose to focus their coursework in ceramics, drawing/printmaking, jewelry/metalsmithing, new media, painting, and sculpture.

Art Education

The Art Education major at the University of Central Oklahoma offers students a curriculum leading to certification for teaching art in (K-12) public school systems. The Art Education classes are grounded in the foundation arts and supported by focusing in a variety of studio disciplines and the study of art history concepts. Additional coursework in art and professional education practices and experience in the field make this program one of the most comprehensive and respected teacher education programs in the region. Students are prepared to move directly in to teaching positions not only in academics but also in community and art related organizations. The Art education program currently has a 100% placement rate for its graduates.

Art History

The Art History program, previously known as Global Art and Visual Culture, focuses on helping students orient themselves within contemporary society through an engagement in art historical knowledge and questioning identities, assumptions, and memories. The program is unique for its focus on global art history through an emphasis on reading, discussion, and writing, rather than lectures and tests. In each course, students practice critical thinking by interpreting primary and secondary art historical sources to construct their own historically grounded understanding of the issues.

Arts Administration

Arts Administration will prepare students to undertake entrepreneurial business endeavors in the arts, whether that applies to managing developing artists or leading and operating visual and performance-related outlets. Students will have the opportunity to select a track within the disciplines of the College — Academy of Contemporary Music, Art, Dance, Design, Music and Theatre Arts. While taking classes in the selected track, students will also take classes in leadership, communication, marketing, accounting, public organization and more. Students will receive the educational benefits and creative problem-solving skills of a business degree fused with specialized training within the arts.

Asian Studies

UCO’s Asian Studies minor brings together a foundation in an Asian language and upper-division classes on important topics, which are taught in English.

Audio Production (offered at ACM@UCO)

The ACM@UCO’s purpose is to provide practical learning experiences that help our students survive and thrive in today’s music and entertainment industry. Students majoring in Audio Production will learn all aspects of the music production process through hands-on experience in the academy’s state-of-the-art recording studios. Production instructors cover concepts in sound design, editing, mixing and mastering as well as live studio recording and postproduction.
